Hello again,

A few questions for the more knowledgeable on here.

As you may have read I have a 05 model year Bullhog but the owners manual part number 5JN-F8199-A0 seems to be the wrong year manual. According to the info it reads "2nd Edition March 2002" also the drawings of the bike are obviously of the early 02 model bike, this I can see, so all the information regarding instruments and carburettor types are incorrect for my bike. Does anybody have an 05 model manual to match their 05 bike with the correct carburettor types listed? My manual shows Mikuni BSR37 carbs.

I also have no information on how to operate the newer 05 instruments although this looks easy enough to work out but there is no info on the immobiliser that is now fitted as standard.

I also read from Axman that the 05 models have catalysers fitted but I wonder if this is correct for the UK models as there is no oxygen sensor fitted to my bike. As a ex-motor technician this seems a very crude system if cats are fitted with no oxy sensor as cats and carbs do not sit very well together as anything with manual choke can irreversibly damage the catalysers. These carb/cat systems were very prone to failure here in the UK in the 80's. Nowadays adaptive fuel injection with oxygen sensors and catalysers are the usual way to go.

I believe I have seen European Bullhogs offered with ABS. Can anybody confirm if this is true as ABS have never been available in the UK?

Next question.....I have currently been in touch with a British carb specialist (Allan's Performance.co.uk) who thinks that the carbs on 05 Bullhogs are the same as earlier models. This guy supplies what you people refer to as the topham kit so any information on carb differences would be welcome as I don't want to order the wrong kit for my carbs. Also is the K & N air filter normally used in this set up as it claims to be a higher flowing filter. Usually the filter suppliers suggest that you use a carb correction kit (dynojet in the UK)so in addition to a topham kit I require a K & N filter plus dynojet kit in order for this mod to work?

Has anyone on here used these mods altogether?

Sorry for the long questions but I just like to get the info right before I go ahead and start to make improvements.

Hello JT,

as I have a 02 Bulldog, I´m only able to answer some of your questions, not all.. :?
- concerning the manual..can´t Yamaha UK provide a correct manual??
- the 05 models are definitely fitted with catalysers albeit, as you have stated, "unregulated" ones..as the Bulldog is still outfitted with carburettors, there is no way to "regulate" them, like the more hightech solution with fuel-injection...yes, it´s crude, does´nt help the environment very much and, in my opinion, has only alibi function for political correctness..
- the Bulldog was definitly never built with ABS...and there is no practical or feasible way to retrofit it
- whether the carbs are the same on your and the pre 05 models I don´t know...but I´m sure that they are differently jetted!! Ask Yamaha UK..they should know.
- the K&N Air-Filter does not improve airflow or power-output on the Bulldog (Krause, who modified my Bulldog explained, that K&N´s work best with flat filters. The original, round filter on the Bulldog flows enough air for all eventualities. I put my Bulldog on the Dyno after modification with original filter and for comparison with K&N...the difference was 0,2 hp...nothing to write home about.. :-D ) What you do have to change is the airfilter cover..either the aluminum one from Topham/Krause or the cover from a TDM will do.
- the usual changes to "unkork" your engine are : remove the stops on top of the carb slides, rejet the carburettors, fit new airbox cover, fit free flowing exhaust (like BOS for example) or modify the standard one (look at my album)
- whether the "Dynojet-Kit" works on the Bulldog I do´nt know. I haven´t heard from anyone using it yet..

Hi Jonny,
my Bulldog is type RP052, too.
And yes, my manual has almost the same part number as yours: 5Jn-F8199-G0 (german), 2nd Edition March 2002, showing the pre-2005 model.

First, I thought it was a Dealers mistake to give me the wrong manual. But now I guess, Yamaha has just forgotten to create manuals for the RP052.

Hello again,

concerning your carburettors I got new informations..:

the pre-2005 carb is a Mikuni BSR37/2 5JN 100
your carb (model 2005 up) is a Mikuni BSR37/2 5JN 410 !!

So they are definitely different, as the Yamaha parts-no. shows too : pre 2005 is 5JN-14900-00 and costs 1.039,52€ the 2005 up model is 5JN-149oo-10 and costs 1.559,85€ !! They are differently jetted too (main or needle-jet and idle-jet)

So, if you order parts from Topham/Krause/Allans Performance , make sure to tell them exactly which model you have..

About your owners-manual I´ll start a search here in the German forum... I´m curious what we´ll find..

About two hours ago I posted my request about the 2005 manual and now I have got the first positive answer.. :shock: :-D but not only that..the user "Dogerla" sent me an e-mail with the pages concerning the instruments..and in english.!!

:-D Wow! thanks for all the great help.
I will be visiting my local Yam dealer at the weekend and will order a correct manual.
Regarding the catalizers, are they fitted inside the rear mufflers? as the normal place for cats is just before the mufflers! :roll:
I have looked at your album Axman and i see the modified ends of your mufflers- can these be self fitted? as i like the lower cost that these mods must be :wink:

Hi Jonny,

you´ve got e-mail.. :-D

The catalyzers on the Bulldog are indeed inside the mufflers...we all don´t exactly know what they are good for because even without cats the Bulldog already complies with the newest emission-regulations fo 2008.. :shock:

The endcaps on my mufflers are from Krause and can be fitted by you..if, and that is a big if, you got a good welder handy who knows how to weld stainless steel..if you want more info let me know.

A real "must" is the homepage of www.ride-in.de. This Yamaha dealer is still very interested in developing goodies for the Bulldog.. :=D>:

This week he surprised us we new endcaps for the original muffler.. as it is not yet depicted in his online-shop send him an e-mail or give him a ring..

:=D>: Cheers Axeman,I would like to know if the Krause end caps are available separately and the price.The welding is not an issue as i work alongside some WORLD CLASS welders who only work in stainless & titanium!
I will keep a look out at ride-in.de for any more developments, its great to have a choice!

Hi again,

I spoke to Krause in Dortmund right now and they told me, that all parts are available.

A pair of flanges : 91,00€ incl. VAT
A pair of endcaps : 81,00€ incl. VAT

First you have to cut off the existing endcap (the whole thing that sticks out of the muffler) then you weld the Krause-flanges onto the muffler and then you * the endcap onto the flanges (make sure you order the big endcaps..!! They´ve got small ones too but you don´t need those!)

Hi everyone!
Just to let you know that a new 05 Owners handbook is at this moment on its way to me courtesy of my supplying dealer.So a BIG THANK YOU to all the good people on BOC for giving me the correct info on this :cool:
I have now ordered the Allens/Topham kit and i think that i will ditch the standard mufflers in favour of some Stainless Oval slip on cans from an English company close to me called FUEL and are fully EU approved, this gets rid of the useless Cats as well!
I will keep you posted!
